"In January, 1967, Pete was once again a featured guest for Melody Maker’s ‘Pop Think-In’ column. On fashion, he declared, “I used to dress soberly but I’ve found that colour has become more important in my life than it was ever before.”
This rediscovered love for colourful clothing could perhaps be attributed to his girlfriend, 20-year-old Karen Astley, a formerly a dress design student at Ealing Art School. “The story was that she was the cloakroom attendant at the Railway Hotel Harrow,”says Karen’s younger brother Jon. “She was very much into London gigs. She probably went to the Oldfield Hotel.” Although only an acquaintance of Pete’s at the time, Karen had bought home a copy of ‘I Can’t Explain’ in early 1965.
Jon Astley: “I thought, ‘Oh, this is great! And I was really quite hooked into The Who quite early on.” When his sister became the guitarist’s girlfriend, Astley was finally able to see The who perform live. “Pete, bless him, took me to a gig. I was quite young, but my parents seemed quite happy to let me go. I must have been 14 or 15. I can’t remember where it was, somewhere like Luton. I just remember being completely blown away."
